Causes of hiccups Common causes that induce hiccups are:

  1. Eating too fast or too much during meals;
  2. Drinking too many carbonated beverages;
  3. Other gastrointestinal or respiratory irritations such as smoking, drinking, and eating spicy foods;
  4. Over-excitement or anxiety, especially when accompanied by hyperventilation or air-swallowing, as in hysteria, can cause hiccups by swallowing large quantities of air.

If the hiccups do not stop and last for more than 48 hours (2 days), it is called intractable hiccups.

This is usually a sign that an organic pathology may be present. In this case, it is time to see a doctor to check for other diseases.

Especially for the elderly, if you have hiccups for several days, you should go to the hospital to rule out organic pathology.

Because some cancers, such as liver cancer, stomach cancer, etc., pressure on the diaphragm, can also cause persistent hiccups.

What are some ways to stop hiccups?

  1. Breath-holding method

Hold your breath directly for 30 to 45 seconds.

Alternatively, wash your hands, put your thumbs in your mouth, and gently press on the back third of your palate.

This method should be used with caution for people with poor cardiopulmonary function.

  1. Bending over to drink water

Drink a few sips of warm water, swallow slowly, and bend over at 90 degrees 10-15 times.

As the stomach is closer to the diaphragm, it warms the diaphragm from the inside. The internal organs will also massage the diaphragm when bending over. Relieve the spasm of the diaphragm, to achieve the purpose of stopping hiccups.

  1. Stretching the tongue with force

Use a piece of clean gauze on the tongue, pinch the tongue with your fingers and stretch it outward.

  1. Scare method

Take advantage of the hiccups not to pay attention, suddenly scare him.

Shock, as a strong emotional stimulus, can be transmitted through the cortex to the subcutaneous centers to suppress diaphragmatic spasms.
